For the last twenty years, the paint industry of our country
has made a rapid progress. Under the foreign professional competition, new
technique, new products and new equipments have grown by leaps and bounds.
In 2005, the annual output of the paint was over 2.5million tons. The architectural
paint output was 1.1million tons, which ranked third in the world. However, on the surface of interior and exterior of the wall, split, bulge and shedding are common. These phenomenons severely affect beautification and using function. Of course, some are caused by cutting corners because of pursuing the maximum of economic benefit; some are caused by inferior construction quality but the quality of the paint is up to the standard. Why? The main cause is the contradiction between more developing paint industry and lagging painting industry. If we want to solve this contradiction, we should develop painting industry first. If it can¡¯t reach full development, it will restrain the developing of the paint industry; on the other hand, it will increase the requirement to the paint. Well, it will stimulate further developing of the paint industry and both of them will go into a good circulation which they could assistant and develop with each other. Therefore, it is necessary to expatiate and analyze about the system of architectural paint application. 1. Paint application Painting application is a complicated systems engineering. The whole process includes painting design, painting organization, painting application, process control, project inspection, engineering settlement and etc. Painting design includes: Suited plan, blueprint and design, affirming to the plan, engineering budget; Paint organization includes: Painting contract, organizing plan, communication of technology, technical process; Process control includes: Application according to contract, personnel management, materials management, funds control, safety management, course control, quality control, cost control, engineering coordination; Project inspection includes: Check and accept materials, facilities, qualification, quality, working procedure and general check£¬audit and check, Engineering settlement includes: Area measure, report and check information, report and check settlement, engineering settlement. 2. Coating structure Coating structure is the finished product state of painting materials and is the result of painting. Changed into coating structure by painting process, painting materials will produce beautification and protection functions. Consequently it will produce use value. Coating structure has suited using function and composition. It is a relative perfect system. It is composed of different matters and hierarchy and it will satisfy the need of architecture using function. 2.1 The function of the coating structure Generally, the coating structure three functions. There are beautification, protection and other special functions. 2.1.1 Beautification function Beautification function means that coating structure has the function of beautifying the building. It includes colors, luster, quality feeling figures and etc. The architecture is a concretionary art. 2.1.2 Protecting function Protecting function means that coating system has the function of preventing oxygen, water, acid rain, ultraviolet, factory emissions, climate and other harmful substances in the natural environment form eroding the construction, and extending the useful life of the building. The main functions are anticorrosion and waterproof function. 2.1.3 Other special functions The main functions are heat insulation and heat preservation that will greatly reduce energy consumption. With the appeal of environmental protection and energy conservation is getting higher and higher, heat preservation of outer walls is a new paint direction. Furthermore, there are also anti-ray function, stealth function and other special functions. 2.2 The composing of coating structure Generally speaking, integrate coating structure includes five hierarchies (except other special functions): Anti-alkali sealer/ Functional putty/ Decorative stone coating/ Paint layer/ Finish 2.2.1 Anti-alkali sealer Anti-alkali sealer means that: first, it can prevent cement surface which has high alkalinity due to less maintaining period from corrupting to the subsequent coat; second, it can seal the fine pore on the cement surface to reinforce waterproof effect. 2.2.2 Functional putty The action of functional putty is to remedy defect of the under-stratum and meet with the special demands. Filled putty: Most putty layers are used for sealing the fine pore on the cement surface and make the surface flat to a certain extent. It generally has a certain roughness. Waterproof putty: It is mainly used to enhance waterproof property of the putty layer, thereby achieve waterproof of primer, putty, finish, and etc. So that it will satisfy with requirement of waterproof function of outer walls. It is glossy and exquisite and is the last required layer composed of glossy surface. Flexible putty: It is used to remedy the fine crack or prevent the cement surface from chapping. It has better plasticity and a certain extension rate. Interface putty: It is generally used for tile, mosaic and some glossy surfaces as interface treating paint. So that it will keep the intense adhesion with subsequent coat. It is used for outer walls reconstruction. It can be divided into two species, one is macromolecule polymer; the other is inorganic silicates. Macromolecule polymer specie has excellent adhesion, anti-strike property, certain extension rate, good flexibility, and better waterproof property. It also can be used in waterproof treating for cement surface. Inflexible interface putty made up of inorganic silicates has high rigidity, good anti-strike property, and is not easy to crack. Adhesive£ºIt is generally used in the heat preservation system of the wall. It is used to felt the wall, coating, putty coating, EPS, XPS, and etc. It has good adhesion, flexibility, plasticity and waterproof property. 2.2.3 Decorative stone coating Decorative stone coating is used in forming needed superficial quality feeling and figures, attaining optical aesthetic feeling, reducing noisy and some special requires. Its surface can be made into lots of effects such as aluminum board, orange rind, embossment, figures, wallpaper, ripple, granite, old brick, tile and etc. It can be shown by thick paint. But the cost is quite different. Special art stone coating: Can be sprayed, block spread and applied by special tools. The effects includes: lubricity, aluminum board, orange rind, embossment, figures, wallpaper, ripple and etc. Sand-wall stone coating: Can be sprayed, block spread and applied by special tools. The effects includes: granite, old brick, tile and etc. 2.2.4 Paint layer The action of paint layer is to form color of paint layers structure, meet aesthetic requirement and protective need of outer wall. Useful life of the paint layer is decided by the species and quality. It is most basic part of the paint structure. General paint: It includes benzene propane emulsion, pure propane and etc. It divided into interior emulsion and exterior emulsion. Elastic paint: About low elasticity, moderate elasticity and high elasticity. It can remedy the fine pore, and has good waterproof property. It can be used as waterproof paint. The thickness of film is proportional to the extension rate. Metal paint: It includes polyurethane paints and fluorocarbon paints. It can be made to aluminum board effect. 2.2.5 Finish The main action is to protect the whole paint layer structure, and it can enhance the anti-dirty property of the surface of paint layer. 3. System of paint application The paint layer structure is result. The realized process of this result is painting process. The process decides the structure. We should consider the process as a system. Its function is to gain perfect structure. The elements of the system of paint application include: materials, machinery, technology and environment. 3.1 Materials Painting materials means various matters that are translated into paint structure entirely or partially in the painting process. Painting materials includes: Anti-alkali sealer/ Functional putty/ Decorative stone coating/Paints/ Finish. The capability of the structure lies on materials that are physical base of keeping its performance. 3.2 Machinery The influence of painting machinery to the coating is strong, sometimes it is decisive. Various coatings which have different quality feeling and figures need corresponding painting machinery to achieve. It can be divided into two kinds: painting mechanical equipments and application tools. Painting mechanical equipments: Air ejector, high-gas spraying machines, lifts, blenders, burnish machines. Application tools: Great rail, rail, ruler, Yang vehicles and Yin vehicles, iron rollers, hair rollers, art stamping cylinders, sandpaper sand flats, with palladium of panels, pig brush, steel wool balls. 3.3 Technology As the saying goes, ¡°30 percent paint, 70 percent application¡±. It fully demonstrates the technology¡¯s position and action. Although we have already used large number machines to instead workers in modern industry working lines, but workers¡¯ design and control to every process have strong influence to painting quality. In the present architectural paint industry, handwork is still takes up the leading position. So the management and control to paint technology is essential. First we should choose skilled workers, and secondly we should communicate technology with each other, and then carry out according to pre-established processes and check and accept according to technology proceeding. So that we will control the quality of painting, find problems in time, correct it at once, and make the losses to an absolute minimum. 3.4 Environment It means that grassroots conditions of building and climates and environment in the painting. Building grassroots condition refers to the grassroots wet conditions rate, salinity and surface conditions. Climate refers to the environment temperature, relative humidity and wind. In the industrial painting, it is relative assured and can be controlled. But in the building painting, because of uncertainty of painting environment, the impact is incalculable. The difficulty of building painting is this. Painting construction is a complex dynamic system. It is shown uncertainty of various elements and fashions. Even if part of the factor (painting materials) is defined, but when other factor (such as environment, crafts, etc.) is uncertain, then painting system remains uncertain. Even a good description of the materials may not be able to achieve good project. Then, how can we achieve good painting works? In addition painting material quality standards, should be required to paint a center for the painting auxiliary systems that not only have quality paint, but also a good p, instruments and painting processes, and environmental impacts of Painting full consideration. Of course, all this can be achieved through the design of the program that will band them together. From the paint factory the paint is roughly the same, even different manufacturers have the same product standards, and also essentially the same. But each one project painting environment and the owners request are different. How to make the same paint to meet the needs of different owners and the environment, the most effective approach is to design the corresponding Painting program according to environmental requirements and the needs of the owners, and apply according to it. 4. Painting design As a building or decoration works, the sub-item, there should be corresponding painting engineering design requirements and design standards, according to design requirements before construction engineering design drawings and painted a matching program. Larger painting projects in the country have advanced painting matching program for the design requirements. Therefore, painting design deserve attention. Clear Painting environmental requirements with the owners is a prerequisite for Painting matching program design. And though the design of programs and prior communication with the owners, we eventually recognize painting program, then we promote the stability and reduce risks by pre-certification. Because painting design has just begun, it is not perfect in every aspect. We should improve it in developing process. 4.1 Supporting plan Supporting plan should be carried out on the following contents. 4.1.1 Painting environment Painting environment includes building function, style, towards, construction season, climate and atmospheric environment, grassroots conditions. 4.1.2 Owners¡¯ requirements Owners¡¯ requirements include painting appearance requirements, functional requirements and lifetime requirements. Appearance requirement Appearance requirement includes color requirements including design, cell design, surface quality feeling, flowers design, urban planning, etc. Functional requirement Functional design includes waterproof and anti-seep design, anti-chap design, anti-dirty design, and heat insulation and preservation design. Lifetime requirement Just as waterproof design includes lifetime requirement, painting design also includes lifetime requirement, for example five years, ten years, twenty years and etc. The difference form life requirement in waterproof requirement, painting lifetime should includes beautify functional lifetime, protective function and other functional lifetime. From the point that coat is fashionable dress of building, beautify function lifetime is not too long. The desire of getting it done once and for ever is impossible. Therefore reasonable design of painting lifetime is an important component. And the most important protective functions should be as a keystone of lifetime design. Of course, there are other functions in the Painting requirements, should be fully considered. 4.2 Blueprint and design Before application, there should be application drawing and effect drawing, so that owners could choose and carry out final construction technology. 4.3 Project affirm After matching program with drawings and designs by the owners of multi-negotiation with the knowledge and reach, confirmed painting construction program, and then under construction program that construction techniques and processes. Its main contents containing materials selection and coatings Painting structural design options identified. 4.4 Project budget During the construction program confirmed, the project budget is basically clear. 5. Painting organization Generally, the program does not include construction design organizations in the design of programs, only as a separate item. It has four components. 5.1 Painting compact After painting confirmed in the program and budget confirmed, we should sign painting contract with the owners. 5.2 Organization project Organization projects include the design of programs organized organizations, personnel, programming, quality control measures, security guarantees and civil construction norms. 5.3 Technology communication Before application, we should tell the construction team our real intention on the technical content and processes related to the construction, in order to ensure the construction and implementation of the requirement. 5.4 Technology program It should include: construction techniques and construction processes. We should keep it identical with recognizing the construction program and the technical content. Except, we should make above processes be the element of the test procedures. 6. Process control After painting design, application accordance with the requirements of painting design is the key issue. It is painting construction process. Painting works is a more professional project management which should ensure that the "Four management, three control, one coordinating¡±. That is, personnel management, materials management, financial management, safety management, progress control, quality control, cost control and project coordination. 6.1 Application according to the compact 6.2 Personnel management Choose skilled workers, establish application management system. 6.3 Materials management Related materials should be managed, controlled, recorded. Refer to ¡¶Engineering Materials Management¡·. 6.4 Financial management In project budget, list capital plan according to rate of engineering, keep the project go on wheels. 6.5 Safety management Safety management means that we should take various necessary painting security guarantees in the process of painting that include people, wealth and material security management. It mainly includes personnel safety education, on-spot security warning, owners¡¯ protection of finished product, safekeeping of construction materials and on-spot security management; security rope and security helmet. Except for security management, it also includes civil application management, which refers to cleaning to the construction environment, stacking by kinds to materials, appearance of construction workers. Refer to ¡¶On-spot Application Management. 6.6 Procedure control Procedure control means that organizing application workers according to time limit for a project in painting design, and subsection control, so that we ensure the completion of project. 6.7 Quality control Quality control is that dividing application progress into several working procedure, establishing standard for each procedure, checking and accepting according to the standard. Ones up to the target pass, the others not up to the target rework. 6.8 Cost control Cost control is that dispensing materials according to the material consumption, controlling labor costs under fixed costs for quantity control costs in the context. Once founding the costs go beyond the standard, finding out the reasons rapidly, and taking timely remedial measures. 6.9 Engineering corresponding Whether individual Painting works or other works of sub-item, because there are many variable and unknown factors, therefore we should communicate and contact with owners, construction teams, other units to meet, obtain and balance the demands and interests of every aspect. Engineering corresponding is also an important item in painting construction management. 7. Item testing Item testing is mainly used for insuring the quality of the project, meeting the owners¡¯ requirements, and obtaining a certain value, and achieving related industrial and national standards, and achieved certain social benefits. Of course, more importantly, also to ensure the enterprises achieve certain economic benefits. 7.1 Checking and accepting materials Materials entering the area, the project managers should make relevant acceptance procedures to ensure the quality of construction materials up to the using target, thus guaranteeing project quality is the most important material basis of quality painting engineering. 7.2 Checking and accepting establishment Mainly keep lifts, blenders according with the requirement of security using. 7.3 Checking and accepting qualification Include the qualification of establishment, relevant qualification checking and accepting of application workers. Insure that normal and legal operation of engineering. 7.4 Checking and accepting quality Mainly refer to the checking and accepting quality of construction, generally according to the technical requirements.. 7.5 Checking and accepting working procedure Mainly refer to that whether the engineering accord with technical requirement, generally according to the technical requirements. Of course, it is clearly affirmed in the contract. 7.6 Synthetic checking and accepting Based on the above relevant acceptance in the project, after completing the project, owners organize relevant departments to make finial and all-sided testing to assess and check the painting construction. 8. Engineering settlement Although painting project has completed, there are lots of corresponding words need to do. And it is relative to the economic benefits of painting enterprise. 8.1 Measuring area It relate to the settlement of whole engineering quantity. The best method is measured by owners, or supervision, painting units, construction team which could reduce the workload of measurement and shorten process of settlement. 8.2 Information inspection According to relevant national regulations, we should do relevant and necessary information on the inspection at the same time of application. In the final settlement, pack up the information on the inspection. Give it to supervision, owners or other relevant departments for inspection. 8.3 Settlement inspection After measuring the area, pack up and statistic relevant datum, make out settlement of engineering according to relevant content of compact, and give it to supervision, owners or other relevant departments for total project settlement. 8.4 Auditing and checking Part of the project should be audited by third party, then give all the information inspection and settlement to third party for auditing, the third party check relevant content and datum and make a fair and reasonable accounts. 8.5 Engineering settlement After auditing and checking, do settlement about engineering capital. In addition, the after-sale of engineering, quality tracking painting are all more important to the future painting materials updating and painting processes charging. Architectural painting application is a complex, dynamic systems engineering. Uncertainty of painting environment and the diversity of the owners request increase its complexity and variability. Because of this, architecture shows a mix of construction, different patterns, brilliant purples and reds diversity of the world. Only rigorous, scientific, serious work attitude, positive and innovate, we could have a broader future.
